WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO

Some words about our group

The MAM – Medical Additive Manufacturing research group is a sub-division of the Hightech-Research-Center (HFZ) at the Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBE) of the University of Basel. We work closely together at and with the University Hospital Basel, other clinics in Switzerland and abroad. We develop innovative solutions in the area of Computer Assisted Surgery and Medical Additive Manufacturing, together with our international partners, and take the future to the clinic.

Our patients deserve the best possible treatment – the optimal medical services and solutions available in the world – without compromise.

To achieve this goal we work in an inter- and multidisciplinary set-up together with experts of various specialties and countries. For us it is important that they have ingenious ideas and want to do research in our creative team. Our definition of research is not to sit in the lab and thinking of complex chemical formulas – we do clinical research to find modern solutions to improve the treatment of our patients.

OUR SERVICES

HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?

Image Analysis and Segmentation

All we need from our patients is a current medical imaging dataset. From this we create a realistic virtual 3D model, which can be further analysed, processed and can even be fabricated as a three-dimensional anatomical model.

Education and Training

Rapid Prototyping and 3D anatomical models are ideal for student education and the training of postgraduates. We have a unique 3D model database with a variety of diseases and trauma cases of the head region. We regularly organize training courses in the field of AM and medicine.

Anatomical Models

3D anatomical models are ideal for diagnosis, surgical planning, as a template for the pre-bending of plates and also as a guide during surgery. In very urgent cases, we are able to produce 3D models of our patients in a very short time (about 1 day).

Materials

We work with numerous materials for 3D printing, for example ABS, PLA, PLLA, PVA, HIPS, PEEK, Nylon, Composites, Titanium, Ceramics and bone-like substances. Meanwhile, we are able to use FDA approved plastics for FFF “3D printing” that can be sterilized, too.

Custom Implants

In collaboration with several partners, we are able to design patient-specific implants and produce them in different materials (Titanium, PEEK, other alloplastic and even bone like materials).

Surgical Planning and Guides

We have developed a very fast 3D modeling workflow. That allows us to perform – from the creation of the radiological image data to the finished 3D model or drilling / sawing guide – all processes in-house in a very short time frame.

Florian M. Thieringer

Head of MAM Research Group, MD, DDS, MHBA

Florian M. Thieringer is currently Assistant Medical Director for CMF Surgery at the Department of Surgery, University Hospital Basel, Switzerland. He is also the Head of the Medical Additive Manufacturing research group (MAM) at the University of Basel’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and Co-Director of the new transdisciplinary 3D Print Lab at the University Hospital. After graduation with double degree at the TU Munich and LMU Munich in Germany he accomplished his specialist training in Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery in Basel/Switzerland. Additionally he completed a Master’s program in Health Business Administration (MHBA) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. His main interests include computer assisted surgery and medical additive manufacturing for craniofacial deformity and trauma, tumor surgery and reconstruction, oral implants and training in CMF-Surgery.

Philipp Honigmann

Deputy Head of the Research Group, MD, Prof. h.c.

Philipp is a Swiss board certificated General Surgeon, specialised in Hand Surgery. He works as a senior consultant at the University Hospital Basel and at the Kantonsspital Liestal. He is a honorary professor of the University Léon, Nicaragua.

Stefan K. Roehling

Specialist Dental Implantology, Researcher, DDS

Stefan graduated in dentistry from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany in 2009. From 2007 to 2009, he worked for the AO Research Institute in Davos (Switzerland) as a research fellow. For his clinical specialist training and further research activities, he held a position at the Clinic of Oral and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery and at the Hightech Research Center of CMF surgery of the University Hospital Basel (Switzerland) from 2009 to 2013. After a year as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Periodontics, University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (USA) between 2013 and 2014, he returned to Switzerland. Currently, he is a senior oral surgeon and associate professor at the University of Basel. Dr. Roehling is an ITI speaker and has been involved in many experimental and clinical studies on zirconia dental implants.

Miodrag Savic

Researcher, MD, DDS

Miodrag is a fellow of the department of Oral- and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been a member of Prof. Zeilhofer’s Hightech Research Team for about 6 years until now. His clinical portfolio has been built up in more than 10 years in different departments at the University Hospital Basel including Plastic-, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Emergency and Anaesthesia.

Neha graduated in dentistry from the Dashmesh Institute of Research and Dental Sciences, Faridkot, India in 2006. Following this, after working as a primary care dentist in rural India for two years, she joined Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Himachal Pradesh Government Dental College and Hospital, Shimla, India where she completed four year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She started working as a fellow with the Cleft Society of India in the year 2013. She has also completed the Certificate Course on Managerial Effectiveness for Health Care from Indian Institute of Public Health in the year 2014. At present, she is enrolled as a PhD student in the Medical Additive Manufacturing research group at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel.
